Lavinia comes from Chatsworth in KwaZulu-Natal, where she completed her BSc and Honours degrees with the University of KwaZulu-Natal’s Environmental Science and Geography department. In 2014, Lavinia moved to Rhodes University’s Department of Botany for her master’s studies. Her project focused on drivers of bush encroachment in a semi-arid savanna in the Eastern Cape. After completing her MSc, she started her PhD at UCT. Her study aims to understand the complex interactions that exist between and within social-ecological systems, with a particular focus on the impact of road infrastructure development in African regions. She is currently based at UCT’s African Climate and Development Initiative.
